Must-Have Ideas for TPAs
SPBA meetings have earned a unique reputation for the value they offer in sharing insights and ideas you can use in day-to-day operations – guidance your TPA firm will need to survive and thrive in the ever-changing world of employee benefits. Our exhibit-free meetings are a special opportunity for education-minded TPAs and Service Partners (Stop-Loss and Service Partners) to gather and brainstorm on industry challenges.
Regulatory-focused, these meetings are held in Washington DC and present a rare opportunity for candid, off-the-record sharing in the “family,” plus face-to-face mutual education with the government officials who directly make – and enforce – the rules. Members have the chance to interact with top reg writers who aid in understanding new requirements and often look to our attendees for assistance in shaping them. SPBA Spring meeting discussions have been key to altering many important regulations that could have been costly to workers, employers, administrators and the government. Government regulators await our annual Spring conference as a chance to brainstorm with employee benefit experts of SPBA.

(CHEVY CHASE, MD) – Hosting its annual Spring Meeting in Washington, D.C. from March 30 - March 31, 2022, the Society of Professional Benefit Administrators (SPBA) will organize two days’ worth of educational sessions that focus on timely regulatory issues and developments that affect self-funded health plans.
Industry experts, government officials and policymakers will be on hand to share in discussion with third party administrators (TPAs) and other SPBA members about topics that influence employee benefits. This Meeting will kick off with a conversation on the TPA industry and how the industry makes a difference in the lives of plan participants. State laws that need watching along with DOL Enforcement, and various litigation issues will be discussed.
“A big plus with SPBA’s Spring Meetings has always been that we welcome government officials to attend and be part of the exchange of ideas,” said Anne Lennan, SPBA president. “It’s extremely beneficial for TPAs to hear directly from the policymakers and have an active voice in shaping legislation.”
Throughout the two-day Spring Meeting, presentations will highlight the latest regulatory happenings on issues like:
- Broker Compensation Disclosure Rules
- Prescription Drug/Healthcare Cost reporting
- High-Cost Specialty Drugs: how to mitigate costs and fund specialty medications
- No Surprises Act
SPBA is the national association of Third Party Administration (TPA) firms that manage client employee benefit plans. It is estimated that over 75% of U.S. workers and their dependents in non-federal health coverage are in plans administered by TPAs. The clients of TPA firms include every size and format of employment, including large and small employers, state/county/city plans, union, non-union, collectively bargained multiemployer plans, as well as most industries and professions. Visit www.spbatpa.org for more information.
Our Fall conferences focus on the operational side of running an efficient TPA firm and the new options and markets to offer clients. The candid exchange among TPA peers has proven to be an unbeatable way to gather insights from experienced peers. Topics have included: benchmarking, tracking profitability/costs per client, sales/growth strategies, TPA contract language and cyber security. Members are surveyed throughout the year and provide input on the top issues they want to see covered. The SPBA uses this feedback to shape the fall conference schedule and provide as much take-home value as possible.
The Fall 2022 Meeting is September 19th - 20th and is at the Hyatt Regency Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX. If you are interested in attending either the spring or fall meeting, please contact SPBA at Info@spbatpa.org
